FNS Highlighted in Office of Federal Environmental Executive Report
| In "Leading by Example: A Report to the President on Federal Energy and Environmental Management, (2000-2001)" the activities of FNS were highlighted and included in this recommendation: "Agencies should explore the feasibility of adopting the model of the Federal Network for Sustainability (FNS) in other geographic regions. FNS is an alliance of Federal agencies who share staff, authorities, and experience to collectively reduce waste, pollution, energy consumption, and implement other green practices." EPA Announces Green Tag Purchases from Wind, Geothermal Sources
| Lakewood, Colo.- Jan 11, 2005 - The U. S. Environmental Protection agency announced that it has agreed to buy renewable energy certificates, or green tags, for its facilities in Kansas City, Kan., Denver and San Francisco. EPA is purchasing certificates for three years beginning Nov. 1 that are equivalent to more than 17 million kilowatt hours annually-the amount of electricity used by these facilities each year: Denver Regional Office-4.7 million kWh Kansas City Regional Office-4.45 million kWh San Francisco Regional Office-2.275 million kWh Science and Technology Lab, Golden, Colo.-2.1 million kWh Science and Technology Lab, Kansas City, Kan.-3.85 million kWh The Colorado facilities will receive the green power attributes from energy generated at the Colorado Green Wind Project in Prowers County, Colo., and provided by Aquila, Inc. Aquila will also supply certificates for EPA's Kansas City facilities from the Gray County Wind Project near Montezuma, Kan. EPA's San Francisco Regional Office will receive green tags from geothermal energy provided by 3 Phases Energy Services and generated at The Geysers No. 11 in Middletown, Calif. These renewable power purchases encourage the growth of local renewable energy, support the development of green power markets and reduce greenhouse gas emissions, noted Justin Spenillo, of EPA's Sustainable Facilities Practices Branch. The certificates represent the environmental attributes of power generated from renewable electric plants. They don't require the energy to be physically delivered to the buyer, but instead offset the difference between cost of the renewable power and other electricity sources. Western Area Power Administration managed the solicitation and provided contracting services for this procurement, and the National Renewable Energy Laboratory provided technical support. Each year, EPA purchases more than 229 million kWh of green power for 23 laboratories and offices across the nation. This energy provides about 79 percent of the agency's annual electrical needs. FNS Receives Champion of Green Government Award
| The FNS received the Champion of Green Government Award from EPA Region 9 at the Federal Facilities Conference in Reno, May 15, 2002. The award is given to acknowledge individuals and groups outside of EPA who are going above and beyond the call of duty in working to improve the environment and protect our natural resources. |  |

| BPA gets gold partner award from EPA On Nov. 15, BPA was recognized as a gold partner in the Federal Electronics Challenge pilot (FEC). The awards and new partner signing ceremony will take place in Washington, D.C. During 2004, BPA became one of nine FEC pilot partners seeking to reduce the environmental and energy impacts of federal government acquisition, use and disposal of electronic equipment. Given the average three-year life cycle of each computer, the federal government discards approximately 10,000 computers each week. Approximately 70 percent of the heavy metals in municipal solid waste landfills is estimated to come from electronics discards. | EARTH DAY 2002 events included a collection of 950 cubic feet of foam products turned in over a two-day collection at Bonneville Power’s Portland facility. Twenty-five feet of recycled foam converts to one cubic foot of ground pebbles. Eventually the pebbles are converted into computer parts for use within the Northwestern U.S. |  |

45 kW System on Top of the Yosemite National Park Maintenance Building at El Portal, CA
Through the partnership between the National Park Service, Bonneville Power Administration, and the Department of Energy, the use of photovoltaic power to provide the energy needs of a maintenance building in Yosemite National Park at El Portal, CA was conceptualized, analyzed, and commissioned due to efforts of committed FNS members.
